Numerous storytellers have placed their unique spin on the narrative over the years, though none have approached the terror found in Osgood Perkins upcoming chiller. Gretel & Hansel, the twisted take on the seminal story, opens in theaters on January 31. Like the original, the film will pit two children against a timeless adversary. But Perkins isnt afraid, in the least bit, to turn the story on its head and make exciting creative changes to give his audience something theyve never seen on screen before. We spoke with the director about his pending horror movie, and the five distinct updates he made to the beloved fairy tale. Its A Coming-Of-Age Story About A Young Woman As you can tell from the title, Gretel (Sophia Lillis of IT and IT Chapter Two) is the lead character in Osgood Perkins version- a reversal that was long overdue for the Grimm fantasy story and turns it into a female-focused production. “I dont think Hansel and Gretel ever is thought of as that, ” Perkins tells us, emphasizing that it will serve as an origin story for Gretel. As for the casting of Lillis in this lead role, Perkins shares, “[She] is not only already horror royalty and immediately identifiable by audiences as someone they want to follow – which is so important in today's ridiculously, grotesquely overcrowded landscape of movies and shows – but she is someone people are magnetically drawn to. They can't help it, and thats an automatic win right out of the gates. She's a major star in the making. ” Being marketable is one thing. Perkins goes on to rave about Lillis inherent talents as a leading lady, though, emphasizing what her casting means to the on-screen quality of Gretel & Hansel. “She is one of those actors who doesn't need to do anything on camera to be fascinating, ” Perkins said. “The camera understands her in a way that it has understood a few people in film-acting history. Shes super sophisticated, and her eyes tell everything. ” The ‘Old World Is Nonexistent Here Because the fairy tale has been around for centuries, theres a certain “old world” aesthetic thats present in most tellings of the story. Osgood Perkins emphasized that he is staying far away from that in his version. Dont expect modern-day New York City or anything like that. But he makes it abundantly clear, “Theres no villagers or town squares with, like, chickens and shit. There's no thatched roofs, no buckles on shoes. There's none of that. ” In their place, we get modern flourishes that are untethered to a specific time period. “The witchs house looks like a nightmare, ” Perkins said. “The kids clothing is based more on a turn-of-the-century Soviet look. ” Thats something we definitely havent seen before when telling this vintage Grimm fairy tale. Also, Supporting Characters Have Been Cast Aside As Hansel and Gretel go about their way in the original Grimm story, they run into various benevolent folks who help them reach their destiny in the witchs domain. But in an effort to attain a feeling of hopelessness and isolation, Osgood Perkins stripped away the non-essentials. “Every day, when I was asked how many extras do I want, my answer was, I wanted zero, ” he tells us. “There are no people in the movie who aren't named. There are no extras. No townspeople, There's no crotchety old blind person in the alley. ” When asked why he made the choice to eliminate the background population, Perkins explained, “I wanted it to feel almost apocalyptic. Like this is as bad as the world gets. There's no people left. There's no comfort. ” The Witch Is Definitely A Cannibal If you couldnt already tell, Osgood Perkins wants Gretel & Hansel to feel bleak. At the end of the trailer, the movie is described as “a grim fairy tale. ” In keeping, Osgoods witch (played by Alice Krige) isnt just frightening. “We leaned into cannibalism, ” Perkins proudly states, “which is usually sort of suggested by the story, but we went there. ” In other words, keep the kids at home. Osgood has turned the moderately creepy tale into a full-blown dystopian horror story, and we are here for that. Shes Also A Fully Formed Character You can bet theres an oven waiting for Lillis and young Sammy Leakey, who plays her brother Hansel. But Perkins and his co-screenwriter, Rob Hayes, properly developed the witch as a multi-faceted character so Krige would have several layers to explore. “Our witch character is a fully formed, fully rounded, devastated, soulful human being, as opposed to some kind of a caricature, ” Perkins said. “She's an actual hurting human being. ” As for what Perkins saw in casting Krige, the director admits, “I didn't know what I was looking for in the witch. Everybody kept saying, ‘Whats the witch going to be like? And I kept saying, ‘I have no idea until I see it! And then Alice made a tape for us that was so vibey and so textural and so atmospheric. I don't even know if she meant it to be, but it just was. Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister kidnapped by a cannibalistic witch living in a forest in a house constructed of gingerbread, cake, confection, candy, and many other treats. The two children escape with their lives by outwitting her. The tale has been adapted to various media, most notably the opera Hänsel und Gretel (1893) by Engelbert Humperdinck. "Hansel and Gretel" is classified under Class 327 of the Aarne–Thompson classification system. A similar fairytale from Hungary is called Cerceruska. Plot [ edit] The story is set in medieval Germany. Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor woodcutter. When a famine settles over the land, the woodcutter's wife (stepmother to Hansel and Gretel) decides to take the children into the woods and leave them there to fend for themselves so she and her husband will not starve to death. The woodcutter opposes the plan but finally reluctantly submits to his wife's scheme, unaware that Hansel and Gretel have overheard them. After the parents have gone to bed, Hansel sneaks out of the house and gathers as many white pebbles as he can, then returns to his room, reassuring Gretel that God will not forsake them. The next day, the family walks deep into the woods and Hansel lays a trail of white pebbles. Their father lights a fire for them in the woods, and goes to gather more wood. After a while, the kids realize the father isn't coming back. Gretel cries, but Hansel tells her all will be fine. After nightfall, they follow his shiny pebbles back to the house, arriving by morning. Their father is overjoyed, and takes them back in as he was very upset about leaving them in the first place. After a while, famine strikes again, and the stepmother insists that they take the kids back to the forest to leave them. This time, she locks the door to their room so Hansel is unable to gather pebbles. Clever Hansel crumbles up the small piece of bread he is given by his parents, and sprinkles crumbs along their path. Unfortunately, birds eat the crumbs, and they can't find their way home. After searching for a very long time, they come upon a house in the woods made of breads, cakes, and sugar. They eat from the house, as they're very hungry. While they are eating, a witch comes out and invites them inside, offering them a meal, and pretending to be a kind and friendly old woman. After feeding them, she traps them in her house and makes them do chores each day, feeding them well in order to fatten them up for eating. One day, the witch decides it is time to eat, and has Gretel light the oven and provide water for boiling her brother. After a while, the witch asks Gretel to hop in the oven to make sure it is hot enough to bake bread. Gretel, sensing the witch's intent, pretends she does not understand what the witch means. Infuriated, the witch hops into the oven herself to demonstrate what she wants, and Gretel pushes the door closed behind her, leaving "the ungodly creature to be burned to ashes. Gretel frees Hansel from the cage and the pair discover a vase full of treasure and precious stones. Putting the jewels into their clothing, the children set off for home. They arrive home to hear that their stepmother has since died from unknown causes and their father has not had a happy day since they left their home. They live happily ever after with the witch's wealth. History and analysis [ edit] Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm heard "Hansel and Gretel" from Wilhelm's friend and future wife Dortchen Wild [1] and published it in Kinder- und Hausmärchen in 1812. [2] In the Grimms' version of the tale, the woodcutter's wife is the children's biological mother and the blame for abandoning them is shared between both her and the woodcutter. In later editions, some slight revisions were made: the wife became the children's stepmother, the woodcutter opposes her scheme to abandon the children, and religious references are made. citation needed] The sequence where the swan helps them across the river is also an addition to later editions. Another revision was that some versions claimed the mother died from unknown causes, left the family, or remained with the husband at the end of the story. [3] The fairy tale may have originated in the medieval period of the Great Famine (1315–1317. 4] which caused desperate people to abandon young children to fend for themselves or even resort to cannibalism. Folklorists Iona and Peter Opie indicate in The Classic Fairy Tales (1974) that "Hansel and Gretel" belongs to a group of European tales especially popular in the Baltic regions, about children outwitting ogres into whose hands they have involuntarily fallen. The tale bears resemblances to the first half of Charles Perrault 's " Hop-o' My-Thumb. 1697) and Madame d'Aulnoy 's " Finette Cendron. 1721. In both tales, abandoned children find their way home by following a trail. In "Clever Cinders" the heroine incinerates a giant by shoving him into an oven in a manner similar to Gretel's dispatch of the witch, and a ruse involving a twig in a Swedish tale resembles Hansel's trick of the dry bone. Linguist and folklorist Edward Vajda has proposed that these stories represent the remnant of a coming-of-age rite-of-passage tale extant in Proto-Indo-European society. [5] 6] A house made of confectionery is found in a 14th-century manuscript about the Land of Cockayne. [1] The fact that the mother or stepmother dies after the children kill the witch has suggested to many commentators that the mother or stepmother and the witch are metaphorically the same woman. [7] In the Russian Vasilisa the Beautiful, the stepmother likewise sends her hated stepdaughter into the forest, to borrow a light from her sister, who turns out to be Baba Yaga, who is also a cannibalistic witch. Besides highlighting the endangerment of children (as well as their own cleverness) the tales have in common a preoccupation with food and with hurting children: the mother or stepmother wants to avoid hunger, while the witch lures children to eat her house of candy so that she can then eat them. [8] Another tale of this type is the French fairy tale The Lost Children. [9] The Brothers Grimm also identified the French Finette Cendron and Hop o' My Thumb as parallel stories. Clemency poise. Leniency or mercy. A power given to a public official, such as a governor or the president, to in some way lower or moderate the harshness of punishment imposed upon a prisoner. Clemency is considered to be an act of grace. It is based on the policy of fairness, justice, and forgiveness. It is not a right but rather a privilege, and one who is granted clemency does not have the crime forgotten, as in Amnesty, but is forgiven and treated more leniently for the criminal acts. Clemency is similar to pardon inasmuch as it is an act of grace exempting someone from punishment. Commutation of an offender's sentence, however, is the lessening of the punishment based on the offender's own good conduct subsequent to his conviction. Although clemency is a privilege and not a right, questions have arisen as to whether a prisoner sentenced to death is entitled to certain constitutional rights during a clemency proceeding. States that impose the death penalty require a clemency review before a prisoner is executed. For example, Ohio requires the state Parole authority to conduct a clemency review 45 days before the date of execution and file its report with the governor. As part of the review the prisoner may request an interview with a parole board member but the prisoner does not have the right to have an attorney present. An Ohio death row inmate objected to the interview on two grounds, contending it violated his Fifth Amendment right against Self-Incrimination and his Fourteenth Amendment right to due process. He insisted that he should not have to make a choice between seeking clemency and remaining silent about the crime he had been convicted of, and of other crimes he may have committed. A federal appeals court agreed with the inmate that the process violated his Fifth Amendment right, but the Supreme Court reversed the decision in Ohio Adult Parole Authority v. Woodard, 523 U. S. 272, 118 1244, 140 387 (1998. The Supreme Court found that the inmate did not have any due process rights because clemency could only be given at the discretion of the governor. Moreover, the Executive Branch, not the judicial branch, conducted the process. In addition, the Court cited prior rulings where it had stated that pardon and commutation proceedings have not traditionally been the business of courts and are rarely, if ever, appropriate subjects for Judicial Review. As to the Fifth Amendment argument, the Court ruled that the inmate had to exercise the same choice he had made at trial: to testify or to remain silent. In the Ohio clemency process, the inmate has a choice of providing information—at the risk of damaging his case for clemency or for post-conviction relief—or of remaining silent. Acts of clemency are usually issued in isolated cases. In 2002, however, outgoing governor George Ryan announced that he had concerns about the fairness of Illinois judicial proceedings against 160 death row inmates, which compelled him to begin clemency review proceedings into their crimes. During the fall of 2002 a special review board conducted public hearings and private reviews concerning each inmate's case. Relatives of victims gave emotional testimony, while attorneys for the inmates pointed out troublesome charges, including the use of torture on suspects to make them confess. In January 2003, Governor Ryan took the unprecedented step of granting clemency to all the death row inmates. He pardoned four inmates who he believed were not guilty; the remainder of the inmates were given life sentences. But also the layout of the level makes for some really interesting gameplay especially when you think about it in terms of other more linear levels like dam or train. She begins falling apart when an inmates execution by lethal injection is botched, an unspeakable, frenzied calamity that plays out under Bernadines close supervision. The bungled execution rattles the prison, but Bernadine initially seems more concerned with the investigation that it generates. Yet even as she briskly gets back to business, a near-imperceptible change seems to have occurred, affecting her like a slight drop in the barometric pressure. She has trouble sleeping, which doesnt seem unusual. But as she goes through the motions, she also seems increasingly detached from everyone and everything in her life, including her fretful husband. Chukwus writing can sometimes be too on the nose, spelling out the already obvious, but for the most part she doesnt over-explain Anthony, whose despairing resignation and profound isolation Hodge fills in with a discreetly shutdown physicality and a gaze turned inward. Its an achingly moving performance thats shrewdly balanced by a small, heart-heavy turn from Richard Schiff as Anthonys lawyer, an anti-death row activist whose sagging affect suggests that hes spent a lifetime fighting a losing battle. As the clock on Anthonys most recent appeal runs out, Chukwu deepens the connections between warden and prisoner, putting the characters into play even when theyre apart. Both Bernadine and Anthony are captives of their worlds, legally, spiritually, morally. This sounds more simplistic and schematic than what plays out onscreen, where the vividness of the main performances tends to mitigate the scripted sins. Chukwu further complicates the story with a few other lesser characters, including some angry, grieving relatives and Anthonys old girlfriend (a very fine Danielle Brooks) who makes an unexpected if predictably disruptive appearance. Woodards performance gathers its astonishing force incrementally, in subtle choices and inflections that you might not even register as actorly decisions. When Bernadine first patrols the prison, you see a woman supremely in control, a professional whose casual authority informs her every gesture and whose absolute power has relaxed her posture, determined the rhythm of her gait, put an easy swing in her arms. That same power is what finally undoes Bernadine, a tragic figure whom Woodard brilliantly dismantles piece by ravaged piece, tearing apart a false front — and the larger institution this woman faithfully upheld — with unapologetic ferocity. Watching how she informs Thomas, “Im having dinner with Jonathan, ” followed by a little smile and shrug, tells us everything we need to know about their characters past history together.   Its clear that Bernadine desires to reclaim her wholeness, returning to the bliss she once had with her husband, but as she recoils from his touch, we realize that her soul remains locked in the prison even during her off-hours. “I am alone, and nobody can fix it, ” she explains to Jonathan before switching on the television, opting to blot out a surrounding reality ill-equipped to deal with her own. This is a trait she shares with Anthony (the brilliant Aldis Hodge, who recently played another innocent man wrongly accused in “ Brian Banks ”) a prisoner on death row perpetually perched on pins and needles while awaiting the governor to grant him clemency, a verdict that could potentially arrive just minutes prior to his scheduled execution. To maintain his sanity, Anthony embraces optimism at every turn, covering the walls of his cell with paintings of birds that embody the freedom he believes just might be within his grasp, while calling to mind such classics as “ To Kill a Mockingbird ” and “Birdman of Alcatraz. ” He talks over his estranged ex, Evette ( Danielle Brooks, in a shattering appearance) hushing her with assurances of forgiveness until she refuses to be silenced, explaining that she isnt sorry for keeping her distance in order to protect their son.   Whereas Evette chose a life of “barely existing”—her own self-imposed imprisonment—she notes that Anthonys name will live on for generations. Though “Clemency” is ostensibly a work of fiction, its story was inspired by the 2011 execution of Troy Davis, a black man convicted of killing a police officer in Georgia, a charge that has been repeatedly disputed, considering there is enough evidence to cast significant doubt on his alleged guilt. Instead of following the formula of a procedural, Chukwu finds artfully subtle ways of feeding us information, such as when Anthonys lawyer, Marty ( Richard Schiff) is heard over Bernadines car radio, listing the various gaping holes in the case against his client. For much of the picture, Bernadine hovers amidst the proceedings like the Spectre of Death, treating Anthony with a grim formality when all he wants is a hand to hold. The unanswerable questions she directs toward him, such as what food hed like for his last meal or which family members would be willing to claim his body, render Anthony owl-eyed and utterly speechless. Only when making his final statement—a haunting speech modeled after the transcript of Davis last words—does he indirectly address Bernadine by praying, “For those about to take my life, may God have mercy on your souls. ” What follows is one of the most harrowing death scenes ever put on film, and what makes it extraordinary is the fact that we experience it solely through the expressions of Bernadine. As Marty tells Anthony during their final moments together, all any of us ever want to is to be seen and heard, and the crowds of protestors lining up daily to loudly condemn his clients fate provide undeniable proof that news of the injustice has spread throughout the world. Of course, this is little consolation for a prisoner forced to spend the majority of his days in silence and solitude, yet when Anthony is strapped to a crucifix-like chair and given his lethal injection, its as if his pain and anguish is injected directly into Bernadine. In a breathtaking three-minute shot on par with the finale of Céline Sciamma s “ Portrait of a Lady on Fire, ” the camera holds on Bernadines face as the primal horror of the procedure she has overseen for years finally sinks in, breaking through her hardened exterior until he flatlines, prompting her own body to go limp. For the first time, she finds herself at a loss for words, just as Anthony was during her feeble attempts at interaction. You can literally spot the moment when her soul appears to have left her body.
